Apesar de Portugal ser um país pequeno a sua história é conhecida por alguns Australianos mas por outros nem por isso! Claro que não podemos criticar, a presença de Portugueses neste vasto país não é assim tão significativa mas, mesmo assim os números surpreendem:

De acordo com os Census de 2011, cerca de 15.328 Portugueses vivem na Austrália e 45.519 têm descendência Portuguesa.
Os primeiros portugueses que chegaram a Austrália, anos 50, eram oriundos da Madeira. Mas a grande migração ocorreu nos anos 60.
Cerca de 400 pessoas vem todos os anos para a Austrália com o visto de estudante!

A realidade é que as diferenças não são assim tão discerpantes, o grande problema é mesmo a dimensão do país:

Há algumas coisas que são totalmente portuguesas por estes lados e que quase todos sabem bem o que é.

Comida:
Pastéis de Belém, Pasteis de nata, mais conhecidos por Portuguese Tart. Qualquer supermercado por norma vende ou mesmo pastelarias. Os Australiano gostam.
Bacalhau, sabem que nós comemos muito bacalhau e temos vários modos de cozinhar! Mas quando explicamos um simples modo de cozinhar dizem que é uma canseira! Mudar água do bacalhau várias vezes? Não é para eles. Até porque para os Australianos o bacalhau é fresco e não propriamente um peixe que comam muito. Para encontrar bacalhau seco, como nós comemos, temos que ir a espécie de lota e só algumas bancas/lojas é que vendem.
Frango de Churrasco, frango grelhado com piri-piri! Não há como entender isto mas adoram um simples frango grelhado! Super Super famoso por estes lados, é das primeiras coisas que nos perguntam se o frango é assim tão famoso em Portugal. Sinceramente é um frango grelhado sem nada de mais! Alguns restaurantes Portugueses ajudaram na criação desta ideia como o Nando´s ou o Oporto.
Nado´s Resturante - É um grupo de restaurantes Sul-Africanos que teve origem na comunidade Portuguesa e Moçambicana. Este grupo foi fundado em 1987 e tem mais de 1000 lojas em 30 países e está nos 5 continentes. Basicamente eles são conhecidos pelo frango com piri-piri e algumas variações.
Além dos restaurantes, também comercializam molhos para o frango e qualquer carne, sendo possível encontrar em qualquer nos grandes superfícies!

Cod Fish, they have the idea we eat cod fish and we have different ways to cook! But when we explain an easy way to cook it they is very hard like change the water on cod fish a few times isn´t for them! Isn´t easy to find salted cod fish, is easier to find fresh cod fish at see food shop but they don´t eat so much. Here if I want to eat or buy cod fish I should go Fish Market (few shops sell) or Petersham (where the Portuguese community lives)
BBQ Chicken, grilled chicken with Piri-Piri. I don´t have any explanation for Portuguese chicken here in Australia and why they love it! It´s only BQ chicken. One of the first question almost the Australians do: " Is the Portuguese Chicken a famous disk in Portugal?"
I should say some Portuguese restaurant help to create the idea of Portuguese chicken like Nando´s or Oporto

Vinho do Porto. Pelo que percebi os habitantes de Sydney não sabem o que é o vinho do Porto. Passados 9 meses a viver aqui e 5 meses a trabalhar no bar de um hotel, só um casal é que reconheceu o vinho do Porto como um dos melhores do mundo.
Perguntei o que desejavam beber e responderam: 2 vinhos do Porto! Fiquei surpreendida e perguntei se estavam a pedir um vinho Português. Ao qual muito admirados pela minha pergunta disseram: "Sim estávamos a pedir vinho Português mas porque?!". Não queria acreditar e comecei a rir, disse que lamentavelmente não tínhamos vinho do Porto no hotel e que estava surpreendida pois era a primeira vez, sendo eu Portuguesa, que alguém sabia da existência de vinho do Porto, em Sydney, e que pedia. Ao qual eles me respondem:" como é possível?...qualquer hotel tem vinho do Porto mas já percebemos que em Sydney não é bem assim! Nós somos de Melbourne e lá muitas pessoas sabem e apreciam vinho do Porto!" Claro que depois ficamos uns bons minutos na conversa! Eles já tinham estado em Portugal a para variar um pouco só elogiaram e querem voltar!
Drink:
Porto Wine. Till I didn´t meet anyone who know what is Porto Wine. After 9 months living here and 5 months working a lounge/bar of the Hotel, only one Australian couple asked me for Porto Wine.I should share with you because being a really good moment. They arrived at the bar and asked me for Porto Wine. At the begging Ithought was another drink, so to check I asked them if they were asking for Portuguese Wine. They were surprised with me and answer: "yes we are, why?". I smiled and I was very proud, as a Portuguese was the first time someone asked me for our special wine. Unfortunately my answer was no. Also they tell me: " How is possible one hotel doesn´t have Porto Wine, but to be honest we repair in Sydney almost the people doesn´t know anything about this special wine but in Melbourne they love it!" Of course at the end we chat a little, they went in Portugal a few years ago and they love it and want to come!

A maioria dos Australianos sabe que Lisboa é a capital, que temos fantásticas praias, em especial para o surf! Poucos sabem que temos ilhas como a Madeira ou Açores! Mas conheci um casal, em que o senhor trabalhava em cruzeiros e parou umas quantas vezes em algumas ilhas Açorianas mas nunca teve oportunidade de visitar! Mas o seu desejo é que a próxima viagem seja a Portugal e em especial os Açores porque o pouco que teve oportunidade de visitar deixou-o completamente apaixonado!
Hoje conheci um rapaz que já teve duas vezes em Portugal, mais propriamente na Ericeira! Diz que é dos melhores sitios que já conheceu para viver e Surfar!

I can say a big group as Australians know Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, we have very good beaches in special for surf but only fewknow Portugal also has an archipelago of Madeira e Azores. I met one couple, and the man used to work on ships. He stopped sometimes in different islands of Azores but never had theopportunity to visit. he shares with me his next travel will bevisiting Portugal in special Azores, few places he had opportunity to visit leave him in love.
Today i met one guy who have been two times in Portugal, in Ericeira. He said to me Ericeira is one of the awesome places he had met to live and surf.
Situação de Portugal:
Quase todos têm noção que a Europa está a atravessar graves problemas económicos e que Portugal já pediu ajuda financeira! Não sabem mais do que isto, nem o que se passa ao certo nem como se vive neste momento em Portugal!
Economic Situation in Portugal:
The reality for them is Europe is crossing an economic crisis and Portugal is having big problems. They don´t we have any idea how is to live in Portugal at this sad moment.
Depois de alguns meses a trabalhar no bar/lounge do Rydges Hotel, que mundialmente está no mesmo grupo que os Hotéis Pestana em Portugal, houve vários hospedes do hotel e clientes do bar que me fizeram algumas perguntas sobre Portugal!
Tudo começa por perguntarem de onde vem o meu sotaque ou de onde é que venho!
Vou partilhas algumas questões que me fizeram um pouco caricatas para nós Portugueses:
After some months working as a bartender at Lounge/Bar of Rydges Hotel, some guest of hotel and bar asked me some questions about Portugal-
All the time start with: "Where comes your ascent?" or "Where you come from?".
I will share some funny question to us Portuguese.
* " Ok...Portugal...então tu falas Espanhol! certo?!"
* "Ok...Portugal...so do you speak Spanish, right?"
* " Portugues é uma lingua?"
*" It is Portuguese a language?"
* "Então tu falas Portugues mas os Brazileiros tambem falam Portugues, o Portugues de Portugal é derivado do Brasil!" (as pessoas que sabem algumas palavras em portugues sabem portugues do Brasil).
*"So you speak Portuguese as well the Brazilian, but the Portuguese of Portugal comes from Brazil!" (normally when someone knows any work in Portuguese is always Portuguese from Brazil).
* "Ah Portugal....onde é que fica?"
* "Ah Porugal...where is?"
* "Portugal...fica mais ou menos perto, é para os lados dos Emirados Arabes, não é?"
* " Portugal...isn´t so far, it is close Emirates , right?"
* "Portugal...faz fronteira com Espanha certo? Ahhhhh....Portugal aquele país que a Espanha COMPROU!"

Porto Wine. Till I didn´t meet anyone who know what is Porto Wine. After 9 months living here and 5 months working a lounge/bar of the Hotel, only one Australian couple asked me for Porto Wine.I should share with you because being a really good moment.
